The Pink Coach Bag

Pink has always been my favorite color, and purses are one of my favorite assessories, so naturally when we stopped off at the Coach Outlet on the way to Orlando one year, I couldn't resist this lovely pink tote.  What made this tote so wonderful you might ask?  Well, for one, it was pink, it had a suede bottom soft as a camel, the canvas was signature, and the price was fantastic, $167.00, with that bargain, I even conjured Brian into buying the change purse that matched, it was $50 ish.

We had recently sold a home and I had been wanting a Coach bag for years and so he agreed today would be the day, I would get my bag and we both agreed it was a good deal.  He recently bought me a Dooney a few weeks prior but I thought it really was my best interest to have a couple different purses to help coordinate my outfits.

We make our purchase and head down to Orlando, I think I was more excited about my Coach bag than about the week trip to Disney World, for real.  When we check in to our resort, it's early evening so we decide to go to a mall near Universal and grab some dinner, shop for a few minutes, and head back to the resort for some R & R from a long days drive.  I get a pedicure that wasn't in our schedule for the night, and Brian was a bit aggravated, you can't just get out of one of those so easily.  We shop a little and I find a pink shirt at Ron Jon's to go with my new Coach bag.  Everything seemed to fall in line with my Coach bag, and it was starting to get on Brian's nerves as well as the children, they wanted to get on with the trip.

We eventually make it to Magic Kingdom on Monday and with all the kids excitement in the van, the busy parking arrangements, I am only concerned about one thing, do I take the Coach bag with me so everyone can see my bag, or should I keep it in my car.  Decisions decisions, I decide to let Brian decide for me.

"Melissa, you dont' want to hall your bag around everywhere, it's going to get hot, we have the diaper bag, the stroller, probably other things too once we get in the park, I tell you what.  Give me the bag, we will stick it in the floor board, no  one will see it."

Let me backup here and tell you about our new cooler for the trip.  We bought a console cooler that goes between the two front seats in the van.. It is battery operated, you plug from the lighter on the dash to the cooler.  Brian had this great idea to fill it with ice.

"Back the story, he gets my bag and swears an oath, "Honey, no one is going ot steal your bag, I promise, it is safe right here next to the cooler.  Your bag is in good hands, you trust me, right?"

"Well, of course I trust you, after all, you spent your hard earned money and bought it for me, so maybe your right, let's just leave it in the van.  I can show it off when we go to dinner," I said convinced.

Our day begins at Disney World, we spend all day riding rides, going to shows, eating at the famous venues, watching parades, it was a great day, but so exhausted.  We retire early and head back to the resort.  As we get in the car and get the children settled in their seats, already passed out, I get in my seat and something feels really wet.  It's the floor board.  The ice in the cooler than should of never been in the cooler had leaked out everywhere, and guess what was soaked.

"AWH, AWH, My Coach Bag, Brian, Help, look, it's ruined, it's ruined, awh, awh," is all I can say.

"What are you talking about Melissa, oh no, feeling super guilty, Baby, I am so sorry, I didn't do it on purpose, it was an accident."

I begin to cry, it sounds ridiculous, but I was really upset.  Brian got really upset too.  He was upset that I was going to let a purse ruin our family vacation.

"Listen, he says, tomorrow morning, we can call the store, tell them what happened, see what they can do for us. Okay Princess."

"Well, okay, I guess so, I can't take it anywhere now, I am going to have to use my Dooney and I spent all that money on pink attire, I even painted my toes to match my purse."

The next day I call the store while Brian takes the two oldest on a boat ride.  My conversation didn't go as I expected, they wouldn't give me a refund and refused to help in any way.  "Sorry mam, that is your loss, next time be more careful with suede."

"Well, it wasn't me that did it, see, my husband put the purse in the floorboard, and our cooler leaked, which wasn't suppose too...."Mam, I believe you, but like I said, we can't help you, that is your liability."

We go in circles and circles and get no where, while Brian is going in circles and circles with the boys on a boat having the time of their life.

I decided to call Coach.  Here I am on at the resort, suppose to be relaxing and playing, and I am having to call Coach about a purse.  I was so upset at this point.  I eventually get in touch with the corporate, and they explain to me what I have to do in order to get my purse evaluated.

When we get back home to Atlanta, I followed the guidelines and shipped the purse to their QA department.  They made observations, sent the purse back and told me they could not do anything for me.

I called dry cleaners all around town and no one would touch the purse with a ten foot pole, in fear of liability.

Suzy comes over one day to see me and inquires about the purse.  She looks at it and says, "you know, if you don't want this, I'll take it.  I don't care if it's got a stain on it.  It's a Coach bag, it's better than nothing."

"Fine, take it if you must, it's not like I am going to be using it, but Suzy, for real, it's ruined what are you going to do with it?"

"I can find someone to clean it up, just wait." she said postively

I waited all right but to my suprise, five years later, she shows me the purse one day.  Her friend Roger took the purse and cleaned it somehow, it looked amazing.  You couldn't even tell that it was ruined.  He did an amazing job on the purse.

Since that time of the purse accident, I have had plenty of opportunities to have other purses and I decided one day, it's not the purse that defines me, it's what is inside.  I totally lost interest in Coach bags and I thank God that he showed me, it's not about the bag or the exterior or what we have that makes us special, it's what's inside.   Do you know that most of my clothes and purses are bought from thrift stores and I get more clothes now than ever because I shop and by recycled items.  I wear name brands too, it's just pre-owned, and when I shop, the money goes to a good cause.

Nothing against Coach or anyone that owns a designer bag, this was just a lesson learned in my life.

Matthew 6:20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust does corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal.
